November 11 will mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice of “The War to End All Wars". Supported by the Museum of Flight and Friends of the Coupeville Library.

How did that noble goal go awry?  Paul Bloch, a Fleet Seminar Professor for the Distance Education Program of the Naval War College and a Docent at the Museum of Flight, will try to answer that question from three aspects:

  • What were the world conditions in 1914?  What were the participants trying to achieve by going to war?
  • After their dreams of a very violent but short conflict wound up in the morass of the trenches, how did new technologies such as submarines and aircraft and new political ideas such as Bolshevism and Democracy change the direction of the war?
  • Finally, what went wrong with the final negotiated surrender?  Did it really provide an end to the conflict or just set the stage for a resumption of hostilities twenty years later?
